The measure to stop the employment of illegal immigrants comes to the Senate as the border crisis spreads

FIRST IN THE FOX: Senate Republicans are trying to get the E-Verify technology required of businesses nationwide in an effort to crack down on the employment of illegal immigrants amid the crisis at the southern border.

saw Mitt Romney, R-Utah, joined by fellow Sens. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., Bill Cassidy, R-La., James Lankford, R-Okla., and JD Vance, R-Ohio, to introduce a bill that would require employers to confirm the eligibility of employees future to work in the US prior to their employment.

Requiring E-Verify technology for companies across the country will remove a key incentive for illegal immigration, according to lawmakers.

without Romney and other Republicans seeking to mandate E-Verify for employment nationwide to discourage illegal immigration.

“President Biden’s latest effort to limit asylum is too little, too late,” Romney said in a statement to Fox News Digital, referring to executive actions recently announced by the president designed to address the border crisis.

“Millions of illegal immigrants have already flooded into our country under his watch, and his executive order fails to stop widespread illegal employment. By requiring all employers to use E-Verify, our legislation would ensure that businesses hire only legal workers, eliminating a key driver of illegal immigration and protecting jobs for hard-working Americans,” Romney said.

The suspension will be in effect until there have been an average of fewer than 1,500 border encounters over two weeks.

For Cotton, “American workers today compete against millions of illegal immigrants for very few jobs that are unfair. Ending the black market for illegal labor will open up jobs for Americans. Our legislation will take the necessary steps to ensure that every potential employer is hiring only legal workers.”

Cassidy added, “E-Verify protects employees and employers. It is an essential tool in controlling immigration and protecting Americans’ jobs.”

The Republican bill would raise penalties for those who violate labor documents or hire unauthorized foreign workers. However, implementation will be phased in over an 18-month period to allow smaller businesses to comply with the law.
